After closing down on March 22, Ghana has finally decided to welcome back international tourists. The country has also reopened its airports and is allowing foreigners to arrive for non-essential travel once again. Ghana is recognised for its beach resorts, waterfalls, caves, mountains, lakes and heritage tourism festivals and welcomes nearly 1 million tourists every year.
President Akufo-Addo official announced that that the country has reopened its air borders starting September 1, but land and sea borders will continue to remain closed until further notice. He mentioned that he is glad to announce that KIA has reopened and resumed operations and informed that the decision has been communicated to international airlines across the world. He shared that he is satisfied that the airport is ready for safe reopening after week of thorough work.
According to the latest decision, all nations that could normally visit Ghana before the pandemic can once again enter the country, under normal visa requirements. Most nations enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry within Africa, while most travelers will have to apply for a visa beforehand for outside of Africa excepting a few Caribbean nations. It is mandatory for all passengers to undergo a COVID-19 test in the country of origin so that they can bring results of a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 72 hours prior to departure.
Another mandatory test will also be performed at the airport upon arrival, at the cost of the passenger. Passengers who bring a negative PCR test with them and undergo another test upon arrival will not have to go undergo quarantine restrictions provided that the second test is also negative). Passengers have also been asked to fill out an online Health Declaration Form before departure. It is compulsory for all passengers to wear a mask on the inbound flight and at the airport. The government has already announced that the mask must be worn properly for the entire time, covering both the nose and the mouth. All arriving passengers will also undergo temperature scans.
Ghana has also reopened several tourist venues but usage of masks in all public spaces is mandatory. No curfew is in place as of now and all restaurants and cafes have been opened with proper social distancing measures. National tourist sites and attractions have also reopened. However, weddings and other gatherings are limited to 100 people as of now.
