On Tuesday, the Deputy Civil Protection Minister of Greece, Nikos Hardalias has discarded criticism that his country’s decision of partly reopening to tourism is the reason for the recent leap in coronavirus infections.
To quote Hardalias, “Is tourism responsible for the increase in infections? The answer is categorically no. Greece is not doing worse than other countries. We have reopened tourism without a significant burden on the health system.”
He explained that almost 83% of the confirmed cases are domestic and happened due to public gatherings and slackness of health rule application among people.
When questioned why authorities did not report the number of cases on each island, Hardalias stated that it is done “so that they [the islands] are not targeted,” and dismissed claims that authorities are hiding the real number of infections.
Also, he said that couple of travelers have confirmed as Covid-19 positive at their place of residence however tracing directs to the areas they had visited on their recent vacations.
