Already one of Europe’s most talked-about golf investment projects, Empordà Golf Resort has taken its vision for the future a step further by introducing new health and safety rules at the 36-hole Spanish venue.
To help reduce the risk of fire at the leading Costa Brava resort, Empordà’s new management team has implemented a smoking ban for golfers playing its Forest course.
One of the first courses in Spain to become smoke-free, the new rules came into force on July 15, while all members and guests playing Empordà’s other 18-hole championship course, Empordà Links, are being provided with a cone-like “ashtray” container being teeing off to avoid used cigarette filters being left on the course.
Miguel Girbés, general manager at Empordà Golf Resort, said: “There is a high risk that a cigarette butt activated by the wind can cause a serious fire, and that has led us to take the decision on the Forest course.
“The new measures have been introduced to help us keep both courses in the best possible condition, and we would like to thank all smokers in advance for their comprehension and support.”
Set a 30-minute drive from Girona in the heart of the Costa Brava region, Empordà Golf Resort has undergone a multi-million euro investment programme this summer to be transformed into one of Europe’s premier 36-hole golf destinations.
As part of the extensive renovation plans, both golf courses are undergoing a major upgrade, with work being undertaken including the reconstruction of all bunkers using the Better Billy Bunker method, a comprehensive tree clearance programme and purchase of new greenkeeping equipment to improve the all-round condition of tees, fairways and greens.
Players can also look forward to an improved experience in the redesigned clubhouse, including a remodelled pro shop and new restaurant concept, while Empordà’s fresh new look is set to be captured by a significant rebrand of the resort.
Away from the course, the resort’s hotel – which reopened at the start of July – has been completely renovated, with its choice of 86 bedrooms and suites, communal areas and restaurant all being redesigned and given a new sleek interior design concept.
