Ει βούλει καλώς ακούειν, μάθε καλώς λέγειν, μαθών δε καλώς λέγειν, πειρώ καλώς πράττειν, και ούτω καρπώση το καλώς ακούειν. (Επίκτητος)

In the final of the first-ever Sustainable Travel Competition at the Matka Nordic Travel Fair, targeted at businesses, five companies will compete for the €3,000 prize. The products of the competition entrants demonstrate a high level of environmental sustainability. The final of the competition will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki on 17 January 2020.
The finalists of the Sustainable Travel Competition, to be held for the first time at the Matka Nordic Travel Fair, have been announced. A total of 22 Matka Nordic Travel Fair exhibitor companies participated in the competition, and of these, the jury selected five to go through to the final. In their selection, the jury paid attention to the credibility, scalability and reproducibility of the companies’ offerings. The sustainable travel products or services of the participating companies were required to be on sale to consumers in 2020.
The finalists of the competition are:
  • Aurora eMotion
  • Herrankukkaro
  • Aventura travel agency
  • Rukakeskus
  • Visit Saaremaa
The companies that entered the competition place a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. At many companies and in many destinations, there are offset mechanisms for aviation emissions, for example. The companies that have reached the final demonstrate sustainability in their use of technology and innovations, and are also socially responsible. Travel-industry actors of very different sizes entered the competition, and it was gratifying to see that there are various sustainable options for travel products, activities and services made available by actors of all sizes. Holding the final of the competition on the main stage at the Matka Nordic Travel Fair will also enable other companies in the field to get an idea of what sustainability in the travel industry can be, and what results can be achieved through its application”, says Timo Saranpaa, chair of the jury.
The final of the competition will be held on the Inspiration Stage at the Matka Nordic Travel Fair on Friday 17 January, starting at 15:00. In the final, each company will have five minutes to present their product, solution or service, and the results it achieves. The competition jury will then award the winner a €3,000 prize, donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation.
The members of the jury are: chair Timo Saranpaa, the Association of Finnish Travel Agents, AFTA; Liisa Kokkarinen, Visit Finland; Minnamaari Harmaala, Haaga-Helia; Jeppe Klockersson, Fair Travel; Sari Siitonen, Clonet; and Maria Mroue, Messukeskus Helsinki.
