As per the figures unveiled on Tuesday by the Centre for Economic Studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (KOF), the number of overnight stays has risen by about 2.6% during the summers.
Tourism registered over 22 million overnight stays – making it conspicuous that a record was set even though the final count is not in yet. This growth was influenced by local tourists, who influenced an increase of 3.2%, in comparison to 2.2% of international visitors.
“People tend to split their holidays more and more, which means not necessarily going on holiday for a very long time in summer, but also staying in Switzerland and enjoying it for one or two weeks,” says Véronique Kanel, spokeswoman for Switzerland Tourism.
Also, she also made weather conditions responsible for the spike. The fact that it is comparatively hot in summer draws a lot of tourists along with the “development of the sports offer, especially in the mountains.”
A rising trend is more and people are dividing up their holiday time. As an alternative of going on a long summer vacation, new age tourists stay put and enjoy what Switzerland has to offer for a week or two.
Interestingly, the demand during summers has increased more in urban areas than in mountain regions.
