After Italy’s Stromboli volcano erupted on Wednesday, tourists and residents ran for shelter as it spewed ash and huge cloud of smoke into the air.
At round midday, the volcano on a small island of the same name just off the coast of Sicily erupted. Due to the explosion, the vegetation caught fire and a tower of smoke was created with ashes more than a mile high.
The explosion was caused by the pyroclastic flow which is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology.
The hot gas has extended for several hundred metres into the sea. The spectacular explosion was recorded by the tourists on social media.
Stromboli is one of the most active volcano in the world and among one of the Italy’s three active volcanoes. On July 3 an eruption had killed a hiker near the summit however, no injuries were reported this time.
Italy’s fire and rescue service took to Twitter- A high intensity explosion in the centre-north section of Stromboli’s crater. Intervention by firefighters for widespread vegetation fires, teams on motorboats and helicopters. No one appears to be affected for now.
Marco Giorgianni, mayor from the neighboring island of Lipari stated that the situation was under control, they have however activated all the civil protection procedure and banned the docking of non-public transport boats.
Some of the residents were already expecting this eruption although they did not know the exact day.
