Delta CEO Ed Bastian is one of 15 founding member CEOs of The New York Stock Exchange Board Advisory Council, aimed at advancing diversity in the workplace by using members’ personal networks to connect candidates with companies seeking boardroom leadership.
“Businesses cannot be successful without diverse leadership at every level of a company,” Bastian said. “As leaders, it’s our responsibility to ensure from the top, down, people feel welcomed, included and empowered to bring their authentic self to work.”
Bastian’s involvement on the Council, which launched last week, reinforces his personal commitment to cultivating diversity in the workplace. In 2017, he signed on to the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion, and he regularly shares on LinkedIn about the importance of companies seeking diversity, promoting inclusion and driving accountability.
NYSE Executive Vice Chairman Betty Liu will co-chair the Council, along with Sharon Bowen, Seneca Women Partner and former U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commissioner, and Duriya Farooqui, President of Georgia Pacific’s Point A Center for Supply Chain Innovation.
Liu shared the news of the launch, along with the vision for the group’s future, on LinkedIn.
“Our hope is that, in the not-too-distant future, we will be able to look back at a number of diverse directors the Council has helped place,” she wrote. “Issues like board diversity are not solved overnight, but through the continued and persistent efforts of those who care most deeply about them.”
Global CEOs joining Bastian and Liu include Coca-Cola’s James Quincey, Johnson & Johnson’s Alex Gorsky, Procter & Gamble’s David Taylor, and Rent the Runway’s Jennifer Hyman, among others.
