Ει βούλει καλώς ακούειν, μάθε καλώς λέγειν, μαθών δε καλώς λέγειν, πειρώ καλώς πράττειν, και ούτω καρπώση το καλώς ακούειν. (Επίκτητος)

tombola, an online bingo website, has recently uncovered that 50% of Britons don’t feel comfortable requesting for time off and resulted in not taking their rightfully earned holiday allowance.
This percentage is made up from:
  • 38% said they are too busy at work
  • 7% said their boss doesn’t approve their holiday requests
  • 5% said their colleagues would feel they weren’t contributing
However, there are also 50% claiming the reasons they didn’t use up their full holiday because they had nowhere to go, don’t need that much holiday (!) and enjoy work too much.
  • 23% said they had nowhere to go
  • 19% said they don’t need that much holiday
  • 8% said they enjoy work too much
With these reasons given by UK workers, it’s not surprising to find that 44% of Brits don’t use all of their holiday allowance last year! That’s almost half of us. It made worse when tombola discovered that of those 44% workers, almost 1 in 3 (28%) of them had 5+ days of holiday went unspent.
Here’s how much holiday allowance went unspent last year in Britain:
  • 28% - 5+ days
  • 3% - 4 days
  • 4% - 3 days
  • 5% - 2 days
  • 4% - 1 day
It means these 28% of Britons worked at least an extra FULL working week for free, while they should be taking some downtime to recharge or doing something they like.
