Emirates SkywaNetwork Rail has successfully completed a £5.5m upgrade of the level crossing on Station Road in Carnoustie.
Work included replacing the existing two long level crossing barriers with four barriers, enhancement of signalling equipment and complete renewal of the level crossing surface.
Due to the nature of the work, this upgrade could only be delivered by closing the crossing for two extended periods and putting road diversions in place.
During two eight-day road closures and weekend closures of the line between Dundee and Aberdeen, Network Rail engineers renewed the signalling system and infrastructure at the crossing adjacent to the town’s station as well as upgrading the road surface over the tracks.
Lisa McKenna, Network Rail’s project manager for the upgrade, said: We understand that the closure of the crossing for two prolonged periods has been inconvenient for the local community however, this was the only way in which we could deliver the work required safely and efficiently.
“This work will further improve the safety of both road and rail traffic and also enhance the reliability of the railway on the busy east coast main line. We are grateful for the patience of the local community while we carried out this important work.
Work at Carnoustie was part of a £9m package of enhancements that Network Rail engineers delivered between Aberdeen and Dundee over six weekends in February and March – which also include track renewals.ds members can also access the latest information on special offers through the Skywards section on the Emirates app.
