DUSSELDORF, GERMANY - Average hotel prices increase in March 2019 compared to March 2018 in most of the cities listed on the (tHPI), reported monthly by global hotel metasearch trivago.com.
The city with the most significant month-on-month hotel price increase reported on the tHPI in March is Auckland, where travelers will pay 131 euros on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room this month, a 103% increase compared to last month. New York follows with a 20% increase compared to February, with its average hotel price now at 156 euros per night. Average hotel prices in Chicago increase as well, rising 19% this month compared to last to reach 115 euros for a standard double room per night. Rio de Janeiro and Shanghai both report an increase of 17% for a standard double room compared to last month, which translates into 87 and 110 euros, respectively.
European cities decrease hotel prices on a year-on-year comparison
Most of the European cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index register a year-on-year decrease in their hotel prices this March. However, the average overnight rate for a standard double room in Brussels is now 94 euros, a 6% increase compared to March 2018, making it the city with the highest year-on-year hotel price increase this month in Europe. In second place is Berlin, reporting an increase of 4% on a year-on-year comparison, which translates into 94 euros for a standard double room per night. Completing the list of European cities registering year-on-year hotel price increases this month is Madrid, where the average rate of 99 euros is 3% higher compared to last year, and Istanbul, where the average price for an overnight stay is up 2% from March 2018 to reach 59 euros.

Travelers visiting Reykjavík this March will be paying 130 euros per night on average, which is 15% less compared to March last year. Athens, Amsterdam, and Rome all report a decrease of 10% on a year-on-year comparison, which translates into averages of 80, 132 and 86 euros, respectively.
