Tourism Minister Thong Khon said that Cambodia’s tourism earned a gross revenue of 4.35 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 which was 19.8 per cent more than 3.63 billion dollars a year before.
There were more than 6.2 billion foreign tourists in 2018 showing an increase of 10.7 per cent and garnering a total revenue of 4,356 million U.S dollars for the economy.
According to the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism 2018 the largest source of foreign tourist to Cambodia was China having around 2 million Chinese visiting the kingdom.
The minister further went on saying that the nation will be welcoming 6.8 million foreign tourists in 2019 and 7.5 million in 2020. This will be creating an estimated revenue of 5 billion dollars and job creation of 1 million.
In 2030 the kingdom is projected to receive approximately 15 million international tourist which will be generating a revenue of 10 billion dollars and create 2 million job opportunities.
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that tourism has importantly contributed to economic growth, job creations and poverty reduction. In 2018 the economy grew by 7.5 percent and the poverty rate went down by 10 percent.
The prime minister said that Cambodia has become a popular tourism destination for the wolrd and the government sees tourism as green gold. He urged the people to keep the cities clean so that they can bring in more international tourists.
Cambodia is known for three world heritage sites, the Angkor archeological park in the northwestern Siem Reap province, the Preah Vihear temple, the Sambor prei Kuk archeological site in the central Kampong Thom province.
Tourism is one of the four sectors supporting the economy.
