Brussels tourism witnesses record occupancy rate and overnight stays in 2018

On its 60th anniversary, that is 2018, Brussels tourism welcomed 8.5 million visitors recording an increase of 8.7 per cent in overnight stays as compared to 2017 (all types of accommodation combined).

Brussels also has the highest growth rates in hotel attendance. There is a high attendance rate for the months of September, October and November. The occupancy rate reached close to 90 per cent. Peaks in attendance are recorded during international events such as Seafood, and European Union or NATO summits, etc.

As per Olakala, data provider mandated by visit.brussels, the occupancy rate was 74.60 per cent (+5.5 per cent compared to 2017). Overnight stays in all tourist accommodation was 8.5 million (+8.7 per cent compared to 2017).

The occupancy rate of hotels on weekends grew slightly faster (+6.6 per cent) than on weekdays (+4.4 per cent).

For the 5th consecutive year, Brussels is the top European destination for international associative congresses and 2nd in the world ranking, according to the UIA report published in 2018.

International markets
The top 5 nationalities that most frequently visit the capital are:
  1. French: 10.7 per cent of overnight stays in Brussels (+10 per cent compared to 2017)
  2. Spanish: 7.3 per cent (+13 per cent compared to 2017)
  3. British: 6.8 per cent (+10 per cent compared to 2017)
  4. American: 6.7 per cent (+17 per cent compared to 2017)
  5. German: 6.6 per cent (+8 per cent compared to 2017)

The Asian market grew the fastest compared to 2017: Japan (+28 per cent); India (+21 per cent); China (+15 per cent). Over the period from January to October 2018, Brussels’ attractions and museums recorded a 4 per cent increase in attendance.

Visitors to Brussels, are positive regarding the reception of the inhabitants, their accommodation, as well as the quality of their meals.
