African American travellers contributed about U.S. dollars 63 billion to the U.S. travel and tourism economy in 2018 as per the Mandala Research survey. African American travellers are a significant travel group and their spending increased from U.S. dollars 48 billion in 2010 to U.S. dollars 63 billion in 2018.

It is the second study by Mandala Research and it surveyed 1,700 African American travellers about their travel habits. Their top U.S. destinations were Florida, New York City, and Atlanta.

Among the international destinations, the top two destinations are Caribbean/Bahamas (38 percent) and Mexico (26 per cent).  More than half of African American travellers spent their most recent vacation between 100-500 miles from home.

As per the study, African American travellers spend about U.S. dollars 1,345. They spend most of their money on shopping trips at malls, outlet malls, and in downtown areas and on the local and regional cuisine.

Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO William D. Talbert, III, CDME considers African American travellers important for Miami tourism. Kevin Dallas, CEO of Bermuda Tourism Authority and the study sponsor share the same opinion as that of Talbert.

Destinations, hotels, and tour companies are becoming aware of the tourism potential of African American travellers.
