The summit was graced by several high-ranking guests including UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili and the Vice President of Iran and head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization Ali-Asghar Mounesan.
Around 80 members of the UNWTO from 30 different countries participated in the opening ceremony of the 40th UNWTO Affiliate Members Plenary Session: International Seminar on Harnessing Cultural Tourism through Innovation and Technology.
Pololikashvili was the main speaker of the Summit.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), located in Madrid, Spain, is a United Nations agency in tourism that manages tourism affairs. In the current context, it is the eminent and most recognized international travel and tourism body of the world.
At present, the World Tourism Organization has over 557 affiliated members along with 16 from Iran. Hamadan Municipality, Alisadr Tourism Company and Ganjnameh Tourism Complex (all from Hamadan province) are the members of the UNWTO.
Hamadan with almost 1,800 tourist attractions is considered one of the five most attractive cities of Iran.
Avicenna Tomb, Baba Tahir Tomb, Ecbatana Historic Hill, Alavian Dome, Ganjnameh Inscriptions, and Alisadr Cave are among the most significant historical and tourist attractions of Hamadan.
Qorban Historical Tower, Haj Agha Torab bath in Nahavand, Lotfalian Museum in Malayer, Masoudi House and Mausoleum of Mir Razi ad-Din Artimani in Tuyserkan are other attractions in the region that are explored by tourists every year.
