Asia’s rise to cruise industry dominance has been remarkable.

Recent statistics released by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) show that a record-breaking 4m Asians took an ocean cruise throughout 2017 – and an impressive 2.4m of those came from China alone.

Shipbuilding is also continuing to make good progress in this burgeoning market. In June, the keel-laying for SunStone Ships’ first Infinity-class cruise vessel (to be built by China Merchants Heavy Industries) took place in Haimen, China - the first in a series of Sunstone Ships with four firm orders and six options.

Chinese shipyards are also looking at the refit/refurbishment market, as Fincantieri and Chinese repair specialist, Huarun Dadong Dockyard (HRDD), form the first international joint venture specifically designed to handle cruise ships operating in the Chinese market.

As the foundations for creating a major cruise market in the region have been well and truly cemented and growth continues, there’s still one question to answer – what comes next for Asia?
From source market development (penetration for mainland China is still at only 0.17%) to ship building and Shorex, there’s so much happening in this region – and so much to talk about in order to ensure the next decade is as prosperous as the last.

From 23 – 25 October, the Baoshan District of Shanghai will welcome over 900 delegates from brands all over the world for Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific. Featuring two full days of intense debate; engaging conversation and inspirational insight, this event is not only renowned as the region’s most critical conference, but also features a showcase display area and a full networking programme.
