Singapore Airlines, the flag carrier airline of Singapore and the largest airline operator is turning to block chain technology to increase the spending of its loyalty programmes miles.

Singapore Airlines announced that it will launch a digital wallet for its frequent-flyer KrisFlyer program in six months that will be powered by a private block chain. According to the authorities of the Singapore Airlines, this block chain based wallet will enable all the members of the programme to spend their air miles at the retail partners for point of sale transactions.

The company said that this a best initiative which comes about after a successful proof-of-concept trial in partnership with KPMG and Microsoft, and is currently signing up retail merchants – initially in Singapore – to join the block chain-based service.

The new project of Singapore Airlines is the latest instance where blockchain technology is being adopted by Singapore airline and airport operators to improve their operations.

While the United States. airline Surf Air has announced plans to accept cryptocurrencies for ticket payments, and Russian airline S7 is reportedly exploring blockchain technology for the issuing of flight tickets.
