Entry to some of the popular national parks in the US like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Yellowstone might triple under the proposals by the US National Park Service.
From May 1, 2018 the entry fees at 17 of the country’s most popular parks will rise from the current $25 per vehicle to $70. While under the plan those visiting on foot will have to shell from $15 to $30.
Ryan Zinke, the US secretary of the interior mentioned that a hike in the fees was needed to renovate and restore the ‘aging’ infrastructure of the national park. The targeted increase in fees will ensure that some of the most-visited parks are in a protected and preserved state. The visitors should be able to enjoy a world-class experience if they are visiting some of these destinations.
He further mentioned that they should strive to provide their future generation the same if not better experience than they have today. Revamping and maintaining the parks’ aging infrastructure will ensure that it lasts longer.
Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyon lands, Denali, Glacier,Grand Canyon , Grand Teton, Olympic, Yosemite and Zion were the affected national parks.
An extra $70 million per year will be generated for the National Park Service if the proposed fee is approved.
