Forecasters are predicting that a tropical or subtropical system known as a “Medicane” will form in the Mediterranean Sea later this week, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Greece and especially southern Italy.

The medicane might trigger earthquake causing Mount Etna or Vesuvius to erupt.

In the sea west of Italy an area of low pressure is expected to built and will strengthen as it moves east hitting several parts of Greece. The tropical cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea have been termed as medicanes.

As mentioned by research scientists storms like hurricanes are expected to force movement within the earth’s crust resulting in earthquakes and volcanic activity. Shimon Wdowinksi at the University of Miami found evidence that linked the devastating Haiti earthquake in January 2010 to strong tropical storm systems that struck the region in 2008.

The Principal Researcher at the University of Maryland Surja Sharma told that the Medicane could trigger activity but there were two things involved firstly a hurricane can influence the dynamics of the earth and secondly how likely it was.

But it cannot be supported with accuracy  in the next few days the possibility of the earth quake.  Looking at the dynamics it was observed that Etna , Vesuvius and Italy were all earthquake prone, so he mentioned that one had to know what was happening today to predict about the coming days. But if something could trigger it than it could happen.

Dr Sharma said that they did not have sufficient information on these events and more data was needed to make further predictions. The hurricanes and earthquake over Italy might have different time scales which can overlap or there could be possible correlation and causation.

However, it was difficult to analyse as they were not equilibrium systems. A good level of data was needed for both hurricanes and earthquakes, they could not say that these were simple thermodynamic events and theories do not exist for these things.

However, theoretically it was possible but he concluded that there were interesting possibilities with immense consequence but their knowledge was not good enough to say anything with certainty.
