More than 37 people were killed and about ten thousand people were evacuated by the disaster management team and the armies as severe tropical cyclonic depression caused floods and the landslides in Vietnam. It recorded one of the highest death tolls in the country.
About forty people are missing and 21 others were injured after rains caused landslides and flooding, mostly in northern and central Vietnam. The northern and central Vietnam is dotted with many tourism destinations and the tourists are evacuated.
Ngo Thi Su, a resident in northwestern Hoa Binh province said that their entire village had sleepless nights. It is impossible to fight against the water.
Vietnam often suffers from the destructive storms and floods due to its long coastline around the country. More than 200 people were killed in storms last year. However, the impact this time is far devastating than any other calamities in the recent past.
A storm tore a destructive path across central Vietnam just last month, flooding and damaging homes and knocking out power lines.
Vietnam’s Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said authorities were discharging water from dams to control water levels.
In a report, it said more than 17,000 households have been evacuated and more than 200 homes have collapsed, while nearly 18,000 other houses were submerged or damaged. It is also said that more than 8,000 hectares of land growing rice was damaged and around 40,000 animals were killed or washed away.
Hoa Binh province in the northwest of Vietnam declared the state of emergency. Most of the local residents and the tourists are evacuated to the safest place. The administration opened eight gates to discharge water at Hoa Binh dam, Vietnam’s largest hydroelectric dam, the first time it has done so in years.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited northern Ninh Binh province where water levels in the Hoang Long river are their highest since 1985.
Vietnam is also getting the threat of rising sea levels. More than 3,260 km (2,000 mile) coastline is submerging which resulting in increased flooding of low lying coastal regions, erosion and salt water intrusion.
This high intensified flood has also affected seven of 77 provinces in Thailand. More than 480,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) of agricultural land have been affected which resulting in the crisis of the food management of Vietnam. Vietnam’s major agricultural concern is the Thai rice. This month is the harvesting season and this flood causing the million of damages of rice plantation.
