Plymouth is all set welcome a series of ‘floating hotels’ that would be created on board cruise vessels in the Sound within the year 2020 in order to make room for the overwhelming number of tourists that are expected here by that period.

Council bosses have started making contingency plans to realize this dream, as the city waits to host the Mayflower anniversary celebrations in the next three years.

David Draffan, assistant director, Plymouth City Council said in a meeting with the scrutiny panel that none of the cities around the world would offer accommodation for a one-off global event. He added that the city would have a large number of accommodation options for the visitors during the major events like the Olympics like people’s houses, campsites and floating hotels.

He said that currently, there are several sites that are in demand for the hotel sector.

Draffan went on to state that they would have to have certain contingency arrangements, depending on the scale of the visitor arrivals and h also said that such a scenario is quite normal.

He also mentioned that if there is a requirement to come up with a unique concept like having a cruise ship at the sea that resembles a hotel, Plymouth should be ready to go for it.

Cllr Glenn Jordan said that these hotels would b truly impressive especially for the major national and international events that have been going on here.
