The Costa Rica government announced that Discovery Communications, owner of Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, will build a $400 million theme park in the island nation.
The park, which is anticipated to open in 2020 in the province of Guanacaste near Liberia will be owned by Sun Latin America and will license the Discovery name. It is expected to cost $1 billion to develop.
Guanacaste is a popular beach tourism destination some 225 kilometers north of the capital.
Although there is hope that the park will feature such attractions as Shark Week: The 4D Adventure and Myth Busters: The Hall of Mirrors, the park will also focus on biodiversity and conservation and include such activities as scuba diving and rock climbing.
Additionally, it will offer a water park, Discovery-branded hotels and a number of eateries.
Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solís told , the park, which will include hotels, eco-adventure activities, sports areas and restaurants, will generate some 2,000 jobs during its 2018-2020 construction.
Although details have not yet been released by Discovery Communications, Costa Rica president Luis Guillermo Solis confirmed through his social media page that this will be one of Costa Rica’s “largest investments in the last 10 years.”
