Orlando International Airport (MCO) begins 2017 on a positive note with a 3.8 percent increase in overall passenger traffic over last year. However, international traffic declined 8.5 percent in January with 451,906 passengers. Could it be the "Trump effect"?
This new year promises to be a challenging one for air travel. From increased global competition to expanding international access, Orlando International Airport will be ready to meet the demands by promoting air service to our region and providing “first class facilities” to the 42 million passengers we serve annually,” says Frank Kruppenbacher, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.
Despite decline in international traffic, domestic traffic climbed 5.88 percent with 3,164,397 total travelers at MCO. Overall passenger volume increased 3.84 percent with 3,616,303 total travelers and on a rolling 12-month basis; MCO now breaks the 42 million annual passenger mark with a 7.29 percent increase, representing 42,057,023 travelers.
We are cautiously optimistic that the strong domestic travel numbers will continue in this New Year as we closely monitor daily traffic activity and see positive signs from January through February,” says Phil Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.
Central Florida’s convention business including the International Builders Show and the PGA Merchandise Show along with the National Football League’s Pro Bowl game festivities helped bolster January travel numbers.
Also new daily service to Los Angeles by jetBlue and new three-day-a-week service by Frontier to Madison, Wisconsin contribute to the domestic increase.
