Gatwick Airport achieved an impressive 2.8 million passengers travelling through the airport this January, +12.1% on 2016.
Long-haul routes continue their booming growth at Gatwick, +23.2% on January 2016, – once again demonstrating Gatwick’s key role connecting Britain to important growth markets when these links have never been more crucial.
To celebrate, the airport’s busiest-ever January, Instragram artist Rich McCor aka Paperboyo has created a collection of five paper cut out artworks, inspired by Gatwick Airport and some of its most popular routes – Hong Kong, New York, Calgary, Costa Rica and San Francisco.
Route | Passenger in January | Percentage growth on January 2016 |
Hong Kong | 9,640 | New Route |
New York | 29,760 | 81.8% |
Calgary | 6,460 | 1483% |
Costa Rica | 9,590 | 327.7% |
San Francisco | 7,320 | New Route |
Rich McCor, Paperboyo said:
“I’ve been very lucky that my style of photography has taken me all over the world – New York, Hong Kong, Dubai. Having flown out of Gatwick Airport countless times, last month I was fortunate enough to go behind the scenes at the airport which meant wearing a fetching high-vis jacket, having my tripod blown over by an A380, deciphering radio messages from the control tower and being driven around the runway like a boss all whilst taking photos with my cut-outs. It was genuinely one of the most fun experiences I’ve had. Except having to fix my tripod close to the runway!”
Gatwick Airport, Chief Executive Officer, Stewart Wingate said:
“Gatwick continues to set new precedents for a single-runway airport – we now serve 43.4 million passengers annually. With more than 20 new routes added to the airport’s destinations last year, driving long-haul growth of +23.2% in January, Gatwick continues to demonstrate the benefits of competition in the London airport market.
“Further new routes already confirmed to start this summer include Xi’an, China – the UK’s only direct route to the home of the terracotta army – plus British Airways providing passengers with more choice on routes to Oakland and Fort Lauderdale adding to Norwegian’s existing services to these destinations.
“Gatwick’s booming long-haul services and increased cargo volumes, this January, once again prove the vital role the airport plays in the UK economy at this crucial time for the country, as we continue to offer the UK Government a credible and deliverable option for runway expansion.”
