Northern Territory govt asks locals to help relocate crocodiles clogging waterways

Locals in Northern Territory in Australia have been asked by the government to help relocate crocodiles from the Territory’s rivers and streams as they are clogging waterways.

The NT government is taking submissions from the public up until April 1, 2016.

However, the government has put forward certain guidelines to relocate the animals.

The NT government said they will not be delivered; instead, prospective buyers will need to load the animals safely onto their own trucks– alive.

The crocodiles were caught mostly in baited traps and range from anywhere between 1.5 meters in length up to 2.5 meters, meaning those game enough to want to haul away the animals would likely require a truck.

The government also warned those keen on submitting a tender that they must comply with “humane and ethical treatment of the animals, as well as the work health and safety of employees/staff”.

Other criteria for potential buyers to be aware of is that they must be prepared to pay a fair price, they must “take all animals caught” and come up with “innovative and unique ideas” to use the crocodiles.

Another deterrent was that the NT government said the quality of the potential crocodile leather was “considered to be third grade” at best, meaning any leather products would not command a high price.
