U.S. Citizen International Travel up Nine Percent in January 2014

U.S. citizen outbound totaled 4.5 million travelers for the first month of 2014
Strong Traffic to the Caribbean, Central America, Middle East and Mexico (Air)

U.S. travel to overseas markets(1) totaled 2.0 million, up four percent in January.
Regional results were:
  • Europe, 578,000 travelers, up three percent
  • Caribbean, 498,000 travelers, up seven percent
  • Asia, 376,000 travelers, up one percent
  • Central America, 219,000 travelers, up 10 percent
  • South America, 128,000 travelers, up two percent
  • Middle East, 140,000 travelers, up nine percent
  • Oceania, 52,000 travelers, up one percent
  • Africa, 24,000 travelers, down eight percent
U.S. travel to North American markets totaled 2.48 million, up 13 percent in January.
  • Mexico, 2.0 million travelers, up 16 percent; air travel (549,000) was also up 16 percent
  • Canada, 476,000 travelers, flat; air travel (188,000) up one percent

U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 45 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.
  • Europe, a 13 percent share;
  • Caribbean, an 11 percent share;
  • Asia, an eight percent share;
  • Central America, a 10 percent share;
  • South America, a two percent share;
  • Middle East, a nine percent share;
  • Oceania, a one percent share, and
  • Africa, almost a one percent share
North American markets received 55 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel, up two percentage points from January in 2013.
  • U.S. travel to Mexico almost 45 percent share; and
  • Canada almost a 12 percent share.
