U.S. Citizen International Travel Grew Seven Percent in August 2013

U.S. citizen outbound totaled 6.4 million travelers for the month and 42.6 million YTD
Travel to Mexico up 16 Percent in August

August 2013/2012 Comparisons

U.S. travel to overseas markets⁽¹⁾ totaled 2.6 million, up three percent in August and one percent for the year (20.2 million). Regional results were as follows:

• Europe, 1.2 million travelers, up three percent
• Caribbean, 569,000 travelers, up four percent
• Asia, 325,000 travelers, up two percent
• Central America, 194,000 travelers, up four percent
• South America, 148,000 travelers, up four percent
• Middle East, 137,000 travelers, up seven percent
• Oceania, 39,000 travelers, no growth
• Africa, 33,000 travelers, down one percent

U.S. travel to other North American markets totaled 3.8 million and was up 10 percent compared to August 2012. Travel to Canada and Mexico for the year (22.5 million) was up one percent.

• Mexico, 1.8 million travelers, up 16 percent due to a surge in border (1+ night) travel. Air travel (464,000) was up 13 percent
• Canada, 1.9 million travelers, up four percent; air travel (471,000) up eight percent

U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 47 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.

• Europe, a 19 percent share;
• Caribbean, an 11 percent share;
• Asia, a seven percent share;
• Central America, a four percent share;
• South America, a three percent share;
• Middle East, a three percent share;
• Oceania, a one percent share, and
• Africa, a one percent share

North American markets received 53 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.

• U.S. travel to Mexico a 32 percent share; and
• Canada a 20 percent share.
