Hotel Prices for New Year’s Eve

The trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported that hotel prices increase for New Year’s Eve around the world. Here are the prices: 

Hotel prices in Edinburgh have increased by 360 per cent. One night on December 31st will cost an average of £455, compared to the monthly average during December of £99 per night. Edinburgh is renowned for hosting one of the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world, with Hogmanay 2014 welcoming an estimated 80,000 visitors from over 60 countries.

Hotel Prices Increase throughout the UK & Ireland for NYE

Based on the 20 most popular destinations in the UK and Ireland, York has the highest percentage increase following Edinburgh. One night on December 31st will cost an average of £237, up 149 per cent from the monthly average of £95. Also notable are Liverpool (up 97 per cent to £165), London (up 81 per cent to £291), Brighton (up 78 per cent to £146) and Dublin (up 61 per cent to £132).

Hotel Prices Increase by 226% in Rio for New Year’s Eve

Hotel prices have risen across the globe to welcome in 2014. Based on ten popular New Year’s Eve destinations, the largest increase can be found in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. Prices here are up by 226 per cent, from a December monthly average of £130 to £423 on December 31st. Like Edinburgh, Rio is famed worldwide for its New Year’s Eve celebrations, with Copacabana Beach welcoming approximately 2.5 million visitors annually. 

Brazil is a popular destination for 2014 as the host country of the FIFA World Cup, with a total of 12 destinations holding matches next summer. Rio’s Estádio de Maracanã will welcome visitors to seven matches, including the final on July 13th. It is possible visitors will experience hotel price increases similar to New Year’s Eve, with hoteliers attempting to capitalise on the high number of visitors.

Other destinations showing significant increases this December 31st include Sydney (up 162 per cent to £330), Budapest (up 125 per cent to £130), Rome (up 81 per cent to £163) and Barcelona (up 76 per cent to £146).
