Availability of internet in hotel rooms is essential for many business travellers and holidaymakers, with the subject of free Wi-Fi hotly debated.
Hotel comparison website www.trivago.co.uk has ranked the 35 most important countries on trivago according to the percentage of hotels offering internet in their guest rooms. The data is based on over 700,000 hotels listed on trivago and includes internet provided by Wi-Fi or via Ethernet cable.
Unsurprisingly, the United States ranked highest with 89.09 per cent of hotels offering internet in their guest rooms. This is almost 7 per cent higher than the second contender, New Zealand, at 82.28 per cent. The UK ranked in tenth position, with 74.21 per cent of hotels providing internet in their guest rooms. Above the UK were the Balkan countries of Slovenia (75.53%) and Serbia (75.46%) and nearby Holland (77.52%) and France (74.28%), amongst others.
Ranked surprisingly low was Germany, with just 50.76 per cent of its hotels offering internet in their guest rooms. Also in the bottom few countries were the popular holiday destinations of Greece (49.44%), Spain (46.54%) and Portugal (45.21%).
