U.S. - International Air Passenger Traffic for January 2013 up Four Percent


Total International Air Traffic was 14.2 Million Passengers
South/Central America and Middle East Show Solid Growth; Europe was Flat

International air traffic to/from the U.S.(1) totaled 14.2 million passengers in January 2013, a four percent increase over January 2012. U.S. citizen travel (5.9 million) increased one percent and comprised 42 percent of all air traffic. However, non-U.S. citizen air travelers (8.3 million) increased by five percent raising their market share to 58 percent.
U.S. airlines carried 7.6 million passengers, up two percent, however their share slipped from 54 to 53 percent. Foreign flags carried 6.6 million passengers, up five percent from January 2011.

The following, overseas, Canada and Mexico regions are ‘breakouts’ of international:
Overseas air traffic accounting for 10.4 million passengers, 73 percent of all international, grew by three percent. U.S. citizen travel (4.4 million) increased one percent and comprised 43 percent of all air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (5.9 million) increased by five percent increasing their market share to 57 percent.
U.S. airlines carried 5.3 million passengers, up two percent, however their share dropped from 52 to 51 percent. Foreign flags carried 5.1 million passengers, up four percent from January 2012.

North American markets accounted for 27 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.
Canadian air traffic accounting for 2.0 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, increased by six percent. U.S. citizen travel (394,000) increased eight percent and comprised only 19 percent of all air traffic. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (1.6 million) increased by five percent. Market share remained unchanged.
U.S. flags carried 868,000 passengers, up seven percent from last year, and their share increased from 42 to 43 percent. Foreign flags carried 1.2 million passengers, up five percent..

Mexico air traffic accounted for 1.8 million passengers, 13 percent of all international traffic, and was up 5 percent. U.S. citizen travel (1.1) increased three percent and comprised 61 percent of all air traffic. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (705,000) transiting through Mexico, increased by seven percent increasing their market share to 39 percent.
U.S. flags carried 1.39 million passengers, up three percent from last year, and their share dropped from 78 to 77 percent. Foreign flags carried 415,000 passengers, up 11 percent increasing share to 23 percent.
