After the UAE closed the county’s airports and Emirates stopped flying on Wednesday leaving hundreds of thousands of British travellers with grounded flights, the carrier informed passengers whose flights are cancelled that they should accept vouchers that are redeemable after a year.
As per the EU regulations, any airline that cancels flights should offer a full cash refund within a week.
However, the Dubai-based carrier has told UK customers that passengers are urged to accept what is effectively an IOU repayable in a year.
A spokesperson for Emirates commented that the customers can opt for travel vouchers which can be easily processed on their website.
Within 12 months the vouchers can be used against future Emirates flights and if vouchers are not utilised after 12 months, they can still be brought to them for refunds.
Based on applicable fare rules and regulations of the market in which they operate they will still process refunds but it will take some time.
So customers are encouraged to keep their tickets or opt for travel vouchers which can be easily processed on their website.
Another alternative is to keep the basic booking but then use it at any time for a similar routing within two years inspite of high-season charges.
The airline mentioned that they will accept the paid for any flight at any time during the period.
