Tivoli Avenida Liberdade reveals redesigned rooms and suites

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade in Lisbon has unveiled redesigned rooms and suites, introducing contemporary interiors inspired by the hotel’s architectural heritage and Portuguese craftsmanship. The project marks a new phase for the property, which opened in 1933.

Developed by Rodrigo Izquierdo Studio, the redesign combines noble materials, bespoke furnishings and residential comfort. Its design references include the modernist influence introduced by Portuguese architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro in 1955.

Jason Marques, General Manager of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, said: “The unveiling of our reimagined Suites and Rooms represents a defining moment in the evolution of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. This project allowed us to honour the rich heritage of a hotel that has been part of Lisbon’s story since 1933, while elevating the guest experience through a more contemporary and sophisticated approach to luxury. Every detail was carefully considered to create spaces that feel deeply connected to the city, offering our guests an authentic sense of place combined with the timeless elegance that has always defined Tivoli.”

Interiors Reflect Lisbon’s Architectural and Cultural Heritage

The redesign uses a bespoke “Lisbon Flair” colour palette throughout the rooms, suites and corridors. Soft blues reference traditional Portuguese tiles, while gentle greens draw inspiration from Avenida da Liberdade’s tree-lined streets. Warm terracotta tones evoke the city’s rooftops.

Solid wood, natural stone, brass, iron, curated artworks and bespoke furnishings shape the interiors. The materials and colour scheme connect the contemporary design with Lisbon’s architectural identity.

Suites have been conceived as urban residences, with personalised service and refined amenities. The renovation also extends the same design approach to the hotel’s rooms, creating private retreats focused on comfort and understated luxury.

References to Portuguese art and culture appear throughout the redesigned accommodation. A contemporary textile artwork reinterprets Sintra, the tapestry created by Mily Possoz for the Portalegre Tapestry Manufacture.

Carpets draw on the geometries of the hotel’s façade, while gold medallions recall the property’s original 1930s key fobs. Decorative objects and ceramics curated by Felipa Almeida, alongside works by Portuguese artists, introduce further local references.

Bathrooms feature amenities from Portuguese brand Claus Porto, using its Citron Verbena fragrance. The selection adds a sensory element to the redesigned guest rooms and suites.

Restaurant and Wine Collection Enhancements

The hotel has also renovated Cervejaria Liberdade, one of its signature dining venues. The restaurant retains its historic grandeur while introducing a contemporary interior, with high ceilings and large windows overlooking Avenida da Liberdade.

Led by Chef Miguel Silva, the restaurant serves Portuguese cuisine based on seasonal ingredients from land and sea. Its menu features fish and seafood sourced from the Portuguese coast, combining traditional cervejaria dishes with updated interpretations.

Another recent addition is the 1933 Wine & Spirits Collection by Cellar 47, located on the hotel’s ninth floor. The wine store offers a curated selection of rare wines, special vintages and fine spirits under the supervision of award-winning sommelier Jorge Silva.

Through its partnership with Cellar 47, the hotel offers international selections alongside Portuguese producers. Experiences include personalised recommendations, private tastings, masterclasses and bespoke wine sessions.

Tivoli’s Flagship Property and International Portfolio

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is the flagship of Tivoli Hotels & Resorts, where the brand’s history began 93 years ago. The hotel has hosted international figures from the arts, culture and public life, including Maria Callas, Charles Aznavour, Neil Armstrong and Mario Vargas Llosa.

The redesign reflects the property’s approach to contemporary luxury while retaining its connection with Lisbon’s cultural and architectural heritage. Tivoli Hotels & Resorts operates 22 properties worldwide. Its portfolio includes eight  hotels in Portugal, four in Italy and four in the Middle East. Recent additions include Tivoli Kopke Porto.
