Trump’s new rules will reject applicants for temporary or permanent visas if they fail to meet income standards or for receiving public assistance like welfare, food stamps, public housing or Medicaid.

Hundreds of thousands of people could be denied visas and permanent residency for being too poor by the Trump administrations new rules.

This is the latest effort by the president at the centre of his 2020 re-election campaign to place a tough immigration policy.

This might be the most drastic of Donald Trump’s  efforts to restrict both legal and illegal immigration according to experts.

The Migration Policy Institute, a research organization specializing in immigration issues stated that the change could result in more than half of all family-based green card applicants being denied. In 2016 about 800,000 green cards were issued.

Stephen Miller introduced the new rule and the Trump administration’s lead on immigration policy which emphases that the immigrants must be ‘self-sufficient’.

Ken Cuccinelli, acting director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, denied that the change was targeting Latinos.

He went on saying that if we had been having this conversation 100 years ago, it would have applied to more Italians.

The principle driving here is an old American value and that is self sufficiency.

It will provide the long-term benefit of protecting taxpayers and ensure people who are immigrating to this country should not turn into public burdens. They should stand on their own same as the immigrants in years past have done.

The White House claimed Mr Trump was ensuring non-citizens do not abuse “our nation’s public benefits”.

Trump said ,to protect benefits for American citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient.

The White House said that aliens will be barred from entering the United States if they are found likely to become public charges and aliens in the United States who are found likely to become public charges will also be barred from adjusting their immigration status.

In the aftermath of mass shooting in El Paso in which 22 people were killed and more than two-dozen injured the new rules come a week after the president was at the centre of controversy concerning his policies towards the language and the migrants to the US.

It was claimed by many democrats and residents of the Texas city that the president’s perceived racist rhetoric about immigrants will lead to bigotry which instigated the shooting at a Walmart store.
