If you have an adventurous soul, then you never really lose your desire to travel. But with the birth of children, while amazing, comes the need to put a pause on travel. However, once your kids are old enough, you can start planning trips again, this time as a family.
Still, preparing for a trip with kids is different from preparing for a trip with adults. There are extra precautions you need to take. You’ll have to expand your ideas for fun activities. Kids need more stimulation and excitement than adults, so entertainment is important. For a successful trip that lets you satisfy your love of travel and keep your kids happy, here are a few ideas.
1. Get family-friendly rental cars
If you’re renting a car in your destination, you might be tempted to get the coolest sports car available. However, with kids, safety is key. So for tips for renting a car, the simplest answer is to choose one with a good safety rating. A spacious car with comfortable backseats is a great idea.
You may even want to look into newer cars with built-in televisions or DVD players for entertainment. Getting a safe car doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice getting a fun car, but it does mean you might need to hold off on that Corvette.
2. Save, save, save!
Any trip means stashing away extra cash. For trips with children, you’ll need even more. Start saving early to give yourself a chance to save up enough for food, souvenirs, snacks, your accommodations, and whatever other needs may arise. All parents know that keeping a child happy and entertained comes with a price tag, but it’s worth it.
Plus, with the extra money, you can get yourself some fun things, too. Sneak a glass of wine or two when the kids are asleep, perhaps. Just be sure you save up enough for potential unexpected mishaps, too.
3. Carefully consider lodging options
You want to find a location with all the necessary amenities that will keep your family happy and comfortable. Consider the age of your kids and the things that make them comfortable. While being put in a new or unfamiliar location can be good for you, you also don’t want to push them too hard.
For instance, if you’re itching to go camping in the traditional sense, wait until your kids are a bit older. Or if you’re determined to stay in the woods somewhere, perhaps consider a cabin. Similarly, for more upscale locations, find hotels with enough bed space and amenities to keep everyone happy.
4. Plan activities ahead of time
This is especially true if you have younger children. Do a little research and form an itinerary for your trip. This way you can tell your kids the kinds of fun activities you’ll be doing and maybe surprise them with a few you know they’ll love.
If you research ahead of time, you’ll have a better feel for the location where you’re headed. You can plan ahead for what you need to entertain your family.
5. Remember snacks
Kids at any age, and adults, love sweets and snacks. Bringing some along during your travels is always a good idea. That way, if you aren’t anywhere near food, you’ll have some on you. If your kids are getting a little weary, a snack could help them perk up. Plus, you could always grab some local snacks when you reach your destination. Kids love food, as do we all, so keep that in mind.
Conclusion
Your adventures aren’t over once you have kids. They just have to change a bit. Traveling with kids can be just as rewarding as traveling alone. Be sure you have the essentials, plan ahead, and you’ll have the time of your life – and so will they!
