Icelanders are again annoyed with the country’s ever-growing tourist population.
Two French tourists went from door to door asking for a place to stay, according to residents of Bogarnes, a town in the west of the island.
According to one of the residents, Guðrún Helga Árnadóttir, said she was disturbed by the travellers one evening when they came to her door looking for accommodation. However, she refused their request she found the request uncomfortable. The couple then knocked on every other door in her apartment complex, as the local media reported. They were refused by everyone from the block and moved on to the next block with the same request. A fed-up Árnadóttir says she then intervened to explain that their behaviour was not appropriate.
Fifty miles west of Reykjavik, Borgarnes attracts tourists to the nearby Hafnarfjall mountain and Einkunnir Country Park. Árnadóttir says that it is not the first time she’s encountered tourists expecting to shack up for the night with locals. She said, they think it is the ‘normal way to travel’ and do not understand they are intervening in private properties.
She also said that the biggest problem in the rural areas is that the people use the backyard as their toilet. There are strict rules regarding overnight camping, but tourists often break them.
