The National Restaurant Association issued the following statement today in response to the release of the scientific report issued by the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee:
“We will carefully review the scientific report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to ensure that the recommendations provided are irrefutably science-based as the Dietary Guidelines are the basis for all Federal nutrition programs,” said Senior Director of Nutrition Joy Dubost, Ph.D. R.D.
“We have been actively involved in submitting numerous sets of comments on behalf of our members. Upon reviewing the scientific report, we will be submitting additional written comments. We know dietary guidance works best when it educates Americans to focus on balance, variety and moderation.
“There has been a growing trend of restaurants offering a variety of healthful options and we look forward to continuing our work with restaurant operators and chefs to provide even more healthful menu options to adults and children through our nationwide Kids LiveWell program.
“Dining out can be part of healthy lifestyle. We believe that all foods can fit within a healthful diet if consumed in moderation and combined with physical activity. The National Restaurant Association played a significant role in helping to pass federal legislation that will soon provide nutritional information to consumers in more than 200,000 restaurants nationwide. This information will provide even more opportunities for consumers to easily access information about the food they consume from restaurants.”
An updated Dietary Guidelines report is published every five years.
