Amsterdam is proving to be the European destination of choice this summer with hotel committed occupancy in the month of August at an average of 54.8 per cent. The first weekend of the month (the nights of Friday 1 and Saturday 2 August) currently has almost three quarters of all hotel rooms filled – 71.3 per cent and 74.8 per cent respectively.
Forward-looking data from TravelClick, leading provider in hotel market intelligence, looks at European hotel bookings for August which shows London and Paris are hot on the Dutch heels in the hotel bookings stakes this summer. We’re still seeing summer bookings rise in the UK, as half of London hotel rooms are booked on average throughout August (50.6 per cent). This represents a 5.8 per cent rise in bookings on the same dates. The Capital is particularly a weekend draw with two thirds of rooms filled on Saturday nights (69.3 per cent on 2 August; 65.5 per cent on 9 August; 64 per cent on 16 August; 62.5 per cent on 23 August).
The capital of romance, Paris, proves it is not just for Valentine’s breaks and that its popularity continues into the summertime. Half of rooms are booked, on average, throughout August (50.6 per cent), showing a 4.2 per cent increase on bookings at this point in the booking window compared with 2013. One in three rooms is already booked for the first weekend in August (66.3 per cent on Friday 1 August and 64.9 per cent on Saturday 2 August). This is a vast increase on 2013 bookings – a 45.6 per cent growth for 1 August and 26 per cent on 2 August.
Holidaymakers are still heading for guaranteed sun, with more than a third of hotel rooms in Barcelona already filled throughout August (37.5 per cent on average from 1-31 August). Summer sunshine demand is highest for the first weekend of August when committed occupancy is at 56.5 per cent and 58.1 per cent on the Friday and Saturday nights respectively.
Growing in popularity for summer breaks is Prague – more than one in five hotel rooms in the Czech Republic capital city is booked for the first weekend in August (21.1 per cent and 22.5 per cent on the Friday and Saturday nights respectively). This represents an increase of 21.9 per cent and 22.2 per cent on the same dates in 2013.
Information is based on data collated by TravelClick on 8 July 2014 from 13 Amsterdam hotels with a combined capacity of 3,542; 17 Barcelona hotels with a combined capacity of 3,431; 113 London hotels with a combined capacity of 27,003; 33 Paris hotels with a combined capacity of 7,905; and 11 Prague hotels with a combined capacity of 2,971.
