Following
one of the most anticipated dates worldwide, the Cancun Convention
and Visitors Bureau reports the
week of 12-21-12 among the most successful tourism in the
destination’s history.
Hotels across
Cancun enjoyed above average occupancy rates, while locals and
tourists alike took part in celebrations that would bid farewell to
the end of an era and welcome in a new one.
One
of the most popular and moving festivities
took place at Punta Sur on the southernmost point of Isla Mujeres.
Hosted by Dolphin Discovery, the all-night celebration began the
evening of December 20 and lasted until
daybreak of December 21. More than 600 people gathered in all-white
clothing to embrace the first rays of sunlight to reach Mexico’s
shores, a moment the Mayan community had been waiting for 5,125
years. Prior to sunrise, Mayan dancers entertained guests while
shamans blessed them using ceremonial copal. Attendees also feasted
on traditional Yucatecan cuisine fused with Mayan influences, such as
cochinita pibil and pavo en escabeche. Armando Manzanero, the Mexican
singing sensation and popular composer of Mayan descent, also treated
guests to an intimate performance to
ring in the new era.
“The
celebration of 12-21-12 was one of the most important dates in the
history of our community. We are thrilled that so many people from
around the world chose Cancun as their preferred destination to
celebrate the new era,” said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun
Convention & Visitors Bureau. “As we embark on a new path, we
invite tourists to experience the rebirth of
Cancun as a destination.”
Cancun
invites locals and guests to think and behave differently by
exploring the evolution of humanity, and to redefine their
experiences in the land of the Mayans. Guests visiting Cancun will
share in the destination’s renewal, which offers more than just sun
and beaches, but also culture, gastronomy, adventure and
self-renewal.
Cancun
is a multicultural destination where people from all over the world
go to bask in the sun on powdery-sand beaches, relax at
world-class hotels, swim in turquoise ocean waters, enjoy one of
the world’s most important gastronomic destinations, visit ancient
Mayan temples and experience unparalleled adventure.
