With
the Olympics opening in just five days’ time, this summer sees UK
citizens heading to the capital to participate in the festivities:
London is the tenth most popular holiday destination during July and
August.
Spain
is the most popular country: four out of the top ten destinations are
located in Spain, with Benidorm and Barcelona taking the top two
spots. There are the findings from hotel comparison website
www.trivago.co.uk.
Benidorm
is the number one destination for UK tourists this July and August,
with other popular Spanish beach destinations Barcelona and Salou
following closely behind. Clubbing destinations San Antonio and
Magaluf are as popular as ever, appearing at numbers 8 and 14
respectively. 50% of the top 50 destinations for UK travellers are
located in Spain and the Balearic and Canary islands, showing that
Spain is by far the most popular country for UK residents travelling
abroad this summer.
The
traditional beach break is still hugely prevalent in the UK, with 40
out of the top 50 summer destinations located on the coast. However,
the city break is becoming increasingly popular: New York City is the
sixth most popular destination during July and August. Also popular
in the USA are family-friendly destination Orlando and entertainment
capital Las Vegas, featuring at numbers 5 and 12 respectively.
In
Europe, those who are not heading to Spain may be visiting
alternative beach destinations such as Albufeira in Portugal (third
most popular destination) or Paphos in Cyprus (ninth most popular).
European cultural cities Rome, Paris and Venice all feature in the
top 50, for those who are not looking for sand and sea. With the
Olympics occurring during the peak of the summer season (27th –
12th August), many UK residents are choosing to stay at home this
summer and London is the tenth most popular destination.
