Take a plane and a train on the same trip: LOT Polish Airlines launches LOT Fly&Rail

  • LOT Polish Airlines launches LOT Fly&Rail – a service allowing passengers to combine air and rail travel under a single booking.
  • In its initial phase, the service will cover Sweden and Switzerland, providing passengers with access to more than 30 railway stations.
  • LOT Fly&Rail marks the first step in the development of the carrier’s intermodal offering, designed to help passengers reach destinations outside the airline’s direct flight network.
LOT Polish Airlines is expanding its portfolio by introducing LOT Fly&Rail – a service enabling the purchase of both air and rail tickets under a single booking, with one payment covering both transactions. Initially, rail connections in Sweden and Switzerland will be available to passengers, allowing them to reach destinations located outside of LOT’s direct flight network.
The rail journeys are operated by SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) and SJ (Swedish State Railways). The rail connections have been integrated with LOT’s reservation system by AccesRail – a company providing advanced technology solutions to various airlines. The service is available upon arrival in Zurich, Geneva, or Stockholm, covering a total of 33 railway stations – with 18 of them located in Switzerland and 15 in Sweden.
We intend to provide our passengers with the ability to plan their journeys more comprehensively, focusing not only on the flight itself, but also on the onward journey to their final destination. Combining air and rail travel increases accessibility of numerous locations and provides travelers with a greater degree of flexibility. LOT Fly&Rail is the first step in the process of expanding LOT Polish Airline’s intermodal offering – a service whose significance is expected to increase, especially in the context of the planned launch of Port Polska, where the integration of both modes of transport will play a strategic role.

Planning your entire journey in one place

LOT Fly&Rail allows passengers to book both their flight and subsequent rail connection under a single reservation. This eliminates the need to search for and purchase separate tickets for each leg of the journey, while also simplifying travel to destinations located outside the airline’s direct flight network.
Initially, LOT Fly&Rail will be available in conjunction with short-haul flights operated by LOT Polish Airlines. The service will be gradually expanded to include more routes, eventually covering the carrier’s entire network.
LOT Fly&Rail tickets are available through all of LOT Polish Airlines’ distribution channels. Bookings can be made, for example, at lot.com by entering a specific railway station in Sweden or Switzerland as the final destination. The system will then display available travel options that combine both the flight and the train journey.
Check-in for each leg of the trip is handled separately. For the flight, passengers follow the standard check-in process – either online or via the LOT mobile app. The rail portion of the trip requires a separate check-in through the AccesRail Check-In platform. For SBB rail connections, check-in opens 24 hours before the scheduled train departure, while for SJ connections, it becomes available 36 hours before the journey.

Intermodality – a trend modern travel is evolving towards

Combining air and rail transport is an approach currently being pursued by carriers across many European markets. The integration of these two modes of transport aligns with the logic of a hub-based model, which focuses on efficiently transporting passengers from various markets to major transit hubs, thereby providing them with access to an extensive network of connections.
For LOT Polish Airlines, the launch of LOT Fly&Rail in the Swedish and Swiss markets marks the first step in expanding its intermodal offering. In the long term, better integration of rail and air transport could improve access to key transit hubs for passengers from different regions, further supporting the growth of the LOT Polish Airlines network. It is also an important step toward building an efficient and competitive transport system in Poland.
