Malaysia enjoyed further tourism growth in H1 2026

Malaysia welcomed more than 21 million international visitors during the first six months of 2026, reinforcing its position as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing tourism destinations.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the country recorded 21.12 million international arrivals between January and June, a 2.5% increase over the 20.6 million visitors recorded during the same period in 2025.

The results also surpassed pre-pandemic performance, with arrivals running 17.7% ahead of 2019 levels, highlighting the continued strength of Malaysia’s tourism recovery.

Officials credited the growth to the ongoing Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, expanded regional air connectivity, targeted international marketing, the domestic Cuti-Cuti Malaysia initiative, and an increasingly diverse portfolio of tourism experiences across the country.

Neighboring ASEAN markets continued to dominate inbound tourism, accounting for 72.8% of all international arrivals. Singapore remained Malaysia’s largest source market, posting a 4.4% increase, while several emerging Southeast Asian markets delivered particularly strong growth. Visitor arrivals from Cambodia surged 52.3%, Myanmar climbed 45.9%, and Laos increased 25.4%.

Beyond Southeast Asia, other regions also posted healthy gains. Arrivals from East Asia rose 12.7%, Central Asia recorded an impressive 23.3% increase, Oceania grew 7.4%, and the Americas expanded by 4.9%.

Traditional long-haul markets continued to perform well, with China remaining among Malaysia’s top international sources. Tourism officials attributed China’s continued growth to visa liberalization policies combined with sustained promotional campaigns designed to encourage repeat and first-time travel.

With the second half of 2026 now underway, Tourism Malaysia is stepping up its promotional efforts through an extensive calendar of events designed to attract both international and domestic travelers.

Among the headline attractions are the Malaysia Year-End Sale and the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival, both expected to generate additional visitor spending while highlighting the country’s multicultural heritage, performing arts, crafts, cuisine, and lifestyle.

The cultural program will also include events such as The Grand Reawakening Legacy Evolution, Revolution Istana Budaya, and the ASEAN Contemporary Art Exhibition: Masterpiece, reinforcing Malaysia’s ambition to become a leading arts and cultural destination in the region.

Sports tourism also forms a key pillar of the strategy. Malaysia will host the 2026 China GT Championship season finale at Sepang International Circuit from November 6-8, an event expected to attract motorsport enthusiasts from across Asia while boosting demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and local attractions.

Tourism officials said the combination of strong visitor growth, expanded air access, and a packed calendar of events positions Malaysia well to sustain momentum as the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign enters its final months.
