Cyprus steps up focus on lucrative MICE market

Cyprus is strengthening its position as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination as it seeks to diversify tourism, reduce seasonality and attract higher-spending international visitors.

The Cyprus Convention Bureau (CCB), operating under the Deputy Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus, has supported the business events sector for more than 45 years. The bureau provides assistance throughout the event planning process, from initial project development and bid preparation to connecting organizers with qualified local suppliers.

MICE at the heart of diversification

Cyprus is pursuing a broader tourism diversification strategy designed to spread demand throughout the year and attract visitors who generate greater economic value.

Alongside business tourism, the island is developing medical and wellness tourism, agritourism, wine tourism and gastronomy, as well as outdoor activities including hiking, golf, cycling, sailing and diving.

MICE is a key part of that strategy because business events can generate demand outside the traditional peak season while making greater use of existing infrastructure and local expertise.

“Business tourism is a major strategic priority for Cyprus,” said Kostas Koumis, Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus.

“It contributes to more balanced tourism throughout the year and attracts a demanding international clientele that generates significant economic benefits.”

He added that Cyprus aims to continuously improve the quality of its offering while maintaining its competitiveness against other Mediterranean destinations.

The Cyprus Convention Bureau offers a support program for international conferences, incentive trips and product launches held on the island. Services include promotional materials, logistical assistance and technical support.

The bureau also helps associations and companies prepare bids to host international congresses, reducing the administrative burden for overseas organizers and helping secure the operational delivery of events.

31 certified DMCs

Cyprus is positioning itself as a practical Mediterranean option for event planners seeking a combination of accessibility, infrastructure and distinctive experiences.

Short travel times across the island allow groups to combine Mediterranean coastlines, mountain villages and historic centers within the same program.

The hotel sector includes upscale properties with integrated conference facilities, while more exclusive events can be staged at medieval castles, ancient amphitheaters, wineries and UNESCO-listed sites.

The destination also offers high-speed connectivity, audiovisual equipment and multilingual technical teams. English is widely spoken across the tourism and hotel sectors, supporting international events.

Cyprus is also seeking to differentiate its incentive offering through experiences rooted in local culture.

Programs can include wine routes, cooking workshops, hikes through traditional villages, water sports and corporate social responsibility activities involving local communities.

To help business travel managers to best organize a MICE event in Cyprus, the Convention Bureau lists a network of 31 certified destination management companies and professional congress organizers capable of handling international events of different sizes.

The full list of certified companies is available through the Cyprus Convention Bureau.
