Drone activity suspends all air traffic at Copenhagen and Oslo Airports

All flight operations at Denmark’s largest air hub, Copenhagen Airport, were suspended Monday evening following confirmed sightings of multiple drones in the vicinity of the runway. According to Danish police, between two and three large drones were observed flying in the area, leading to the immediate grounding of both arriving and departing aircraft.

The suspension began at 20:26 local time (18:26 GMT), with authorities stating that the duration of the closure remains uncertain. In a public post on social media platform X, police confirmed the airport was “currently closed for take-off and landing,” with no time frame yet available for the resumption of normal operations.s

About 50 flights were diverted to alternate airports, as reported by FlightRadar, also via X. A spokesperson for Copenhagen Airport verified the halt in traffic but offered no additional details. The airport reopened early on Tuesday.

This incident marks a serious disruption to Danish air traffic and highlights growing concerns about the impact of unauthorized drone activity near critical aviation infrastructure. Copenhagen Airport is a major hub in northern Europe, and any extended closure has the potential to affect regional and international connections.

Authorities have yet to confirm the source or intent behind the drone activity. The incident is under investigation, and updates from law enforcement and aviation authorities are expected as the situation develops.

Oslo Airport also closed

In Oslo, a drone was also spotted near the main airport last night, according to Norwegian police. An airport spokesperson told the public broadcaster NRK that the airspace above the airport was closed at midnight (local time) due to a “drone sighting,” and all flights were diverted to the nearest airport.

The airport resumed operations at around 04:30 (local time).

The event underscores the continued need for stricter airspace surveillance and counter-drone technology, particularly around major airports.
