Towards the Setting Sun

Morocco or al-Maghrib al-Aqsa, meaning ‘the Far West’ is, as its name suggests, the westernmost country of the Arab world. Travellers are captivated by its remarkably varied landscapes, from the mysterious expanses of the Sahara Desert, to the spectacular canyons and cascading waterfalls of the Atlas Mountains. Equally impressive are its snow-capped peaks, bustling cities, and the fairy-tale coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.

Morocco represents a unique mosaic of Berber, African and European cultures, reflected vividly in the daily lives of its people – from clothing and cuisine to music and architecture. This is especially evident in the medinas, the historic quarters of cities like Rabat, Marrakesh and Fez. These narrow, bustling streets brim with shops, workshops and cafés, while traditional souks entice visitors with the fragrance of spices, vibrant fabrics, and the lively calls of vendors. It is within this labyrinthine world of colours, tastes and aromas that travellers can truly experience the timeless spirit of the Middle East and North Africa.
Morocco’s authenticity and richness of heritage are also recognised by UNESCO. Its World Heritage List includes nine protected sites across the country, along with six intangible cultural heritage practices, such as the annual tribal gatherings of Sahara nomads, the traditional knowledge and practices associated with the argan tree or the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean region, including communal meals prepared from local produce and the customs surrounding them.

Marrakesh – A Journey into the Heart of Moroccan Tradition

Known as the ‘Pearl of the South,’ the city delights visitors with architecture bathed in warm shades of ochre and surrounded by medieval walls. At the heart of Marrakesh lies the medina – an enchanting Arab centre of narrow alleyways bustling with fragrances, sounds and traditional crafts. Here, you will find one of the most renowned souks of the Arab world, alongside numerous historical landmarks and attractions. No visit to Marrakesh would be complete without experiencing Jemaa el-Fna, the legendary ‘Square of Wonders’. Alive and vibrant throughout the day, the square transforms at twilight into one of the most mesmerising spots on Earth. As you wander through its lively crowds, you’ll encounter dancers, acrobats, snake charmers, boxers, Berber storytellers, and numerous other vividly colourful characters, all contributing to the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary place.

Remarkably, the square is not a modern attraction created for tourists – it has existed for centuries. Marrakesh traditionally served as the final stop for caravans travelling along ancient trade routes from Timbuktu, in today’s Mali. The customs and performances still seen here today have deep cultural roots dating back to medieval times.

Under the Stars of the Sahara

It is often said that true, pristine skies can only be seen above the Sahara Desert. One of Morocco’s most remarkable experiences is an expedition into the desert accompanied by Berber guides. Reaching your overnight camp either by camel or a four-wheel drive vehicle, you’ll find yourself perfectly placed to marvel at a spectacular sunset. As night falls, enjoy a dinner served beneath a canopy of stars accompanied by local musicians gently playing rhythmic drumbeats. Within this magical ambiance, traditional Moroccan cuisine like tagine, harira soup, couscous dishes, and fresh Berber bread taste especially delicious. Staying overnight in a traditional khaima – a nomadic tent – allows you to experience absolute silence and tranquillity, perfectly accompanied by Morocco’s much-loved sweet mint tea.

Agadir

For those looking to unwind, Morocco presents the stunning, wide sandy beaches of Agadir. Agadir is Morocco’s largest seaside resort and was the first African city designed in a modernist architectural style. Modern hotels, spacious boulevards, and lush, green parks blend harmoniously to enhance the city’s beautiful coastline. Agadir is the ideal destination both for visitors seeking leisure and relaxation along the Atlantic coast, and for those eager to explore a wide range of exciting water sports.

Morocco – A Filmmaker’s Paradise

For decades, the mesmerising landscapes of Morocco have captivated filmmakers, becoming stunning backdrops for world-renowned productions. The fortified village of Aït Benhaddou, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, picturesque Essaouira on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, and the lively cityscape of Casablanca have all played key roles in movies and television series such as Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Game of Thrones. Casablanca itself – although not featured in its namesake 1942 classic – has provided stunning locations for modern blockbusters, including Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. From October, with direct scheduled flights provided by LOT Polish Airlines, an even larger group of travellers from Warsaw will have easy access to all these remarkable locations, turning iconic film settings into unforgettable holiday experiences.
