South African Airways drives growth by adding aircraft and expanding routes to high-demand destinations including Brazil, Australia, Tanzania, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, And More

South African Airways expands its fleet to 20 aircraft, boosting connectivity to international destinations like Brazil and Australia, alongside major African hubs.

South African Airways (SAA) continues its strategic expansion by adding two more aircraft to its fleet within the past two weeks, increasing its total fleet size to 20. This latest move reinforces the airline’s steady recovery and growth trajectory, further solidifying its presence in both regional and international markets.

The newly leased narrow-body Airbus A320s, which have been fully integrated into SAA’s signature livery, arrived in Johannesburg from AerCap, a Dublin-based leasing giant and the world’s leading aircraft leasing company. SAA’s ongoing partnership with AerCap highlights the airline’s improved credit standing among major global aviation financiers, marking a significant step in its post-restructuring journey.

The aviation industry is still navigating challenges stemming from post-pandemic supply chain disruptions, leading to delays in new aircraft deliveries and a surge in demand for second-hand planes. Despite these industry-wide hurdles, SAA has successfully secured aircraft to support its operational expansion.

Currently, SAA’s fleet includes a mix of aircraft suited for both regional and long-haul operations, comprising the wide-body Airbus A330s and the long-range A340-300s. These aircraft are instrumental in sustaining the airline’s key intercontinental routes, such as Johannesburg to São Paulo, Cape Town to São Paulo, and Johannesburg to Perth, all of which were reinstated last year.

Looking ahead, SAA is set to further enhance its fleet with five additional aircraft by the end of 2025. This planned expansion aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to increase operational capacity and improve service frequency across key destinations.

In a notable development, SAA launched a new route between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam on January 20, 2025. The airline has also bolstered its flight frequencies on several regional routes to meet growing passenger demand. Flights to Harare, Zimbabwe, have increased from 10 to 12 per week, while Lusaka, Zambia, now sees 12 weekly flights, up from seven. Meanwhile, services to Lagos, Nigeria, and Accra, Ghana, have been increased from three to four times a week.

Furthermore, SAA has expanded its footprint in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), operating five weekly flights to Kinshasa and launching services to the mining hub of Lubumbashi in November 2024. These additions reflect SAA’s commitment to strengthening connectivity across Africa and beyond.

As South African Airways continues its strategic growth, these fleet and route enhancements signal the airline’s resilience and ambition to reclaim its position as a leading carrier in the region.
