The National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) has published results of the Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT) for the third quarter of 2024, covering both non-U.S. residents international inbound air arrivals to the United States and U.S. resident international air outbound departures from the United States.The SIAT is NTTO's ongoing primary research program that gathers statistical data about air passenger travelers in U.S. - Overseas, U.S. - Canadian, and U.S. - Mexican markets. Survey data provides information on passenger trip planning, travel patterns, demographics, and spending for two separate populations – non-U.S. residents traveling to the United States and U.S. residents traveling from the United States. The SIAT has been continuously conducted on a monthly basis since January 1983. Survey data can be found on NTTO's SIAT landing page and can be analyzed through data visualization tools as well as excel reports. 2024 Q3 highlights include: International Inbound Air Arrivals to the United States in the Third Quarter of 2024 - The number of international visitors arriving into the United States increased 5.5 percent from the third quarter of 2023. There were 13 million international air visitor-arrivals to the United States (2.0 million from Canada, 950,000 from Mexico, and 10.1 million from overseas).
- The top overseas source markets for international air visitor-arrivals to the United States were the United Kingdom (1,163,000), India (620,000), Germany (607,000), Japan (559,000), and China (550,000). Together, these top 5 source markets accounted for 35 percent of total overseas visitation to the United States.
- The top U.S. states visited by international air arrivals were New York (3.2 million), Florida (3.1 million), California (2.7 million), Nevada (1.2 million), and Texas (894,000).
- The primary purpose of international visitors traveling to the United States was Vacation/Holiday (60%), followed by Visit Friends and Relatives (23%), and Business (13%).
- The top leisure activities engaged by international air visitor-arrivals to the United States were Shopping (83%), Sightseeing (77%), National Parks/Monuments (36%), Small Towns/Countryside (32%), and Amusement/Theme Parks (31%).
International Outbound Air Departures from the United States in the Third Quarter of 2024 - The number of U.S. residents departing to international destinations increased 6.7 percent from the third quarter of 2023. There were 19.3 million international air visitor-departures from the United States (1.9 million to Canada, 2.9 million to Mexico, and 14.6 million to overseas destinations).
- The top U.S. states of residence of U.S. visitors to overseas destinations were California (1.9 million), New York (1.8 million), Florida (1.5 million), New Jersey (963,000) and Texas (948,000).
- The top overseas destinations for U.S. international air visitor-departures from the United States were the United Kingdom (1.9 million), Italy (1.5 million), France (1.4 million), Dominican Republic (978,000), and Spain (905,000). Together, these top 5 destination markets accounted for 46 percent of total departures to overseas destinations from the United States.
- The primary purpose of U.S. international air visitor-departures to overseas destinations was Vacation/Holiday (64%), followed by Visit Friends and Relatives (25%), and Business (6%).
- The top leisure activities engaged by U.S. international air visitor-departures to overseas destinations were Sightseeing (83%), Shopping (71%), Small Towns/Countryside (51%), Historic Locations (47%), and Guided Tours (41%).
