January 2025 International Air Passenger Travel to and from the United States

 

Air Passenger Enplanements Up 4.6 percent Year Over Year in January 2025

Air Passenger Travel Between the United States and Europe Up 4.6 percent in January 2025

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in January 2025:

U.S.-international air traffic passenger enplanements1 totaled:

  • 21.490 million in January 2025, up 4.6 percent compared to January 2024, with enplanements reaching 108.1 percent of pre-pandemic January 2019 volume. 

Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in January 2025

  • Non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals to the United States from foreign countries totaled:
    • 4.848 million in January 2025, up 1.7 percent compared to January 2024.

    • This represents 91.9 percent of pre-pandemic January 2019 volume.

On a related note, overseas visitor arrivals2 totaled 2.522 million in January 2025, which  reached 87.1 percent of pre-pandemic January 2019 volume, down from 93.2 percent in December 2024. (See January I-94 Advance Release https://www.trade.gov/i-94-arrivals-program)

  • U.S. citizen air passenger departures from the United States to foreign countries totaled:
    • 4.971 million in January 2025, up 6.7 percent compared to January 2024.
    • This exceeded January 2019 volume by 25.2 percent.

World Region Highlights in January 2025 (APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures)

  • Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries were led by Mexico 3.798 million, Canada 2.422 million, the United Kingdom 1.356 million, the Dominican Republic 935,000, and Japan 840,000.
  • International Regional air travel to/from the United States:
    • Europe totaled 4.440 million passengers, up 4.6 percent over January 2024, and down (-0.4 percent) compared to January 2019.
      • (U.S. citizen departures were up +11.7 percent compared to January 2019, while European citizen arrivals were down -13.9 percent.)
    • South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 159 million, up 2.7 percent over January 2024, and up 17.5 percent compared to January 2019.
    • Asia totaled 2.683 million passengers, up 13.8 percent over January 2024, but down (-17.7 percent) compared to January 2019.
      • (Asian citizen arrivals to the U.S. were down -31.6 percent compared to January 2019, and U.S. citizen departures were up +3.8 percent.)
  • Top U.S. Ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 2.688 million, Miami (MIA) 2.331 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 1.959 million, San Francisco (SFO) 1.278 million, and Newark (EWR) 1.171 million.
  • Top Foreign Ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) 1.234 million, Cancun (CUN) 1.066 million, Toronto (YYZ) 982,000, Mexico City (MEX) 779,000, and Incheon (ICN) 609,000.
