September 2024 Total International Travel Volume to and from the United State

 

In September 2024, International Visitor Arrivals to the United States totaled 6,163,140, an Increase of +6.8 Percent Compared to September 2023

Outbound Travel Departures from the United States by U.S. Citizens Totaled 8,512,196 in September 2024, an Increase of +6.2 Percent Compared to September 2023

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office show that in September 2024: 

International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 6,163,140, increased +6.8 percent compared to September 2023 and represented 91.9 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for September 2019.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 3,061,483 increased 4.5 percent from September 2023.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,612,898), Mexico (1,488,759), the United Kingdom (386,227), Germany (202,966), and India (181,163). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 62.8 percent of total international arrivals.
  • Of the top 20 inbound arrival markets for international travel to the United States in September, only South Korea (-0.1 percent), Israel (-10.2 percent), and Ecuador (-8 percent) reported a decrease in visitor volume compared to September 2023.
  • The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for September were the United Kingdom (322,406), Germany (172,173), Japan (144,956), South Korea (134,400), and Brazil (133,505).
  • The top 5 overseas business arrivals for September were the United Kingdom (61,829), India (45,067), Japan (31,509), Germany (29,313), and China (20,963).
  • The top 5 overseas student arrivals for September were China (34,127), India (19,641), South Korea (5,678), Japan (3,665), and Taiwan (3,480).

 International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 8,512,196 increased 6.2 percent compared to September 2023 and were 112.1 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic September 2019.
  • The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.3 percent and overseas was 50.7 percent.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,028,118 (35.6 percent of total departures for September and 35.7 percent (YTD)). Canada recorded a year-over-year decrease of -2.3 percent.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (28,934,585) and the Caribbean (8,753,858) accounted for 46.5 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,381,529 departures. This accounted for 28 percent of all departures in September. Outbound visitation to Europe in September 2024 increased 7.6 percent compared to September 2023.
