While the quiz is important, it’s worth noting that the answers to the additional open-ended question will not affect the selection process. The European Commission will rank applicants primarily based on the quiz responses, and those with the highest scores will be awarded a rail pass until the 35,500 available passes are distributed.
Applications are open until October 16, 2024, at midday CET, so those interested in applying should ensure they submit their application before this deadline. If you have previously received a DiscoverEU rail pass, you are not eligible to apply again.
Travel Details and Options for the Rail Pass
Successful applicants will be able to use their rail pass to explore Europe between March 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026, giving participants more than a year to plan their adventures. The pass allows for up to 30 days of travel within this period, and participants can choose to travel solo or as part of a group.
If you prefer to travel with friends, you can form a group of up to five people. In this case, only the group leader needs to take the quiz and submit the application. Group members will simply provide their personal details and must also meet the same age and residency criteria. Once selected, group members can coordinate their travel plans and enjoy their European journey together.
The pass allows for travel across the EU and other associated countries but can only be used in your home country for one outbound and one inbound journey. The entire journey must include travel to at least one other country eligible under the DiscoverEU scheme. The overall journey can last from one day to a maximum of one month, with participants allowed up to seven days of travel.
Benefits and Additional Perks
Each DiscoverEU pass is typically worth up to €283.26, and participants will travel in second or economy class. In some instances, applicants who live in remote or overseas regions may be eligible for an increased allowance or alternative modes of transport, such as ferries or coaches, to ensure they are not excluded from the program. In exceptional cases, flights may also be offered to participants from more isolated areas, although preference is always given to more sustainable travel options, such as trains.
In addition to the free rail pass, successful applicants will receive a European Youth Card (EYCA), valid for one year. Selection Process and Notifications

Participants will be ranked according to their quiz responses, and a quota of passes has been allocated for each participating country. If a country does not fill its quota, the remaining passes will be redistributed to countries with a higher number of applicants.
If there are more eligible applicants than available passes, the selection process may operate on a first-come, first-served basis as a last resort. This means that early applicants may have a slight advantage if demand exceeds availability.
Once the selection process is complete, successful applicants will be notified by email. They will then be connected with an EU contractor responsible for booking their travel and covering the costs of the pass. It’s important to note that any travel bookings made independently will not be reimbursed, so participants must wait until they are notified and connected with the official travel service provider.
Becoming a DiscoverEU Ambassador
As part of the DiscoverEU program, participants are encouraged to become DiscoverEU Ambassadors. While this is not mandatory, ambassadors are invited to share their travel experiences through social media, school presentations, or community talks. By reporting on their journeys, participants can inspire future DiscoverEU applicants and contribute to a growing community of young European travelers.
In addition, participants will be required to fill out an online survey at the end of their travels, sharing feedback about their experiences. Upon completing the program, participants will receive a certificate of participation, which highlights the skills and competencies gained through their DiscoverEU journey. This certificate can serve as a valuable addition to future applications or résumés.
