AEGEAN carried more than 12.5 million passengers in the first nine months 2024, marking a 5% increase compared to the previous year and carried more than 5.3 million passengers in Q3, maintaining passenger traffic at high levels. AEGEAN continued to grow in Q3, offering more than 6.3 million seats (+2% compared to last year), with total seats offered for the first nine months 2024 exceeding 15.2 million, representing a 6% increase compared to the same period last year.
Domestic passenger traffic in Q3 recorded a 6% increase, while international passenger traffic recorded a slight decrease of 3% compared to the corresponding period of 2023. This decrease primarily reflects reduced activity in Israel and the Middle East (Beirut, Amman) due to current situation and the significant curtailment of charter activity that was presided to address the limitations on aircraft availability. Growth in domestic passenger traffic remains driven by the increasing feeding traffic to/from major long-haul European hubs (Frankfurt, London, Istanbul, Dubai), mainly via Athens and Thessaloniki, where international passenger traffic grew by 3%. It is also worth noting that AEGEAN has nearly doubled the number of direct domestic connections from Thessaloniki to 15 destinations across Greece compared to last year.
For Q4 aiming to mitigate seasonality, AEGEAN, is offering 4.5 million more seats in total compared to last year (+7%). The airline is increasing its operations to and from London (one additional daily flight to/from Heathrow), Turkey (one additional daily flight to/from Istanbul), Cyprus (one more daily flight to/from Athens and up to four weekly flights to/from Thessaloniki), the Balkans (more flights to/from Albania, Serbia, Moldova, Bulgaria), and the United Arab Emirates with a new route to Abu Dhabi starting on October 27.
AEGEAN, is focusing on expanding its operations in Turkey, thus increases frequencies on existing routes from Athens to Istanbul and Izmir to four (4) daily flights starting from October 2024, and five (5) weekly flights respectively from the summer schedule of 2025. Additionally, new direct flights from Heraklion, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Santorini to Istanbul will be added. As from April 2025 and throughout the summer season Heraklion and Santorini will be connected to Istanbul with two (2) weekly flights, increasing to four (4) during peak season, while from June 2025 direct flights to and from Istanbul will also be operated from Mykonos and Rhodes (2 weekly flights respectively). AEGEAN has already recorded a 50% increase in both activity and passenger traffic in the Turkish market for 2024 and by the end of the year, the airline is expected to welcome over 400,000 passengers, offering more than half a million seats, enhancing its presence in the region and expanding passenger options.
