Traverse City Expands Autism-Friendly Destinations with Mt. Holiday Ski Resort’s New Certification

Mt. Holiday Ski Resort has recently been recognized as a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), aligning with Traverse City’s goal to enhance accessibility. This accolade reflects the resort staff’s completion of specialized training on autism and sensory needs, alongside a forthcoming onsite evaluation by IBCCES to further promote inclusivity.

“Obtaining the Certified Autism Center™ designation is crucial for Mt. Holiday to ensure inclusivity and a positive experience for all visitors. It positions Mt. Holiday as a leader in accessibility and equips staff with the essential skills in communication and understanding sensory sensitivities, fostering empathy and respect throughout the resort,” says Jim Pearson, Mt. Holiday executive director.

This achievement is a component of a larger effort by Traverse City Tourism to secure the status of a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD). This initiative ensures that the region’s attractions, accommodations, and entertainment venues are well-prepared to provide welcoming experiences for visitors with autism and sensory sensitivities by undergoing rigorous training and certification.

“Mt. Holiday’s achievement is a testament to their dedication to inclusivity and accessibility. We’re proud to support Mt. Holiday in their commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all,” says Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman.

For over two decades, IBCCES has set the standard in training and certification for professionals across healthcare, education, and business sectors globally, focusing on autism, neurodiversity, and cognitive disorders. The board has tailored programs for the hospitality and leisure industry, including hotels, amusement parks, museums, and other venues, equipping staff with enhanced knowledge and the ability to offer necessary accommodations to meet the needs of an often overlooked community segment. IBCCES stands as the sole board that delivers these specialized programs, which feature expert-led training, contributions from autistic individuals, ongoing support, and continual educational opportunities.

Additionally, IBCCES maintains AutismTravel.com, a complimentary online tool that assists parents in identifying certified locations and professionals.

Beyond its skiing facilities, Mt. Holiday is deeply integrated into the community, supporting through scholarships, collaborating with local organizations such as Kiwanis, and organizing events that foster community cohesion.
